The Fantastic EXPO!

By Yasuyuki SUGIURA

This year, the "Expo" opened in Aichi. Many people went to there, myself included. Even though I went to the Expo only one time, I enjoyed it very much because the food was very good and some of the pavillions were fantastic. I wondered if other students felt the same ways so I did a survey about it among the 3A and 3B students. Out of both classes, only five students did not go to the Expo.

Almost all students went there one time. A lot of students went there two times and only a few went there three or more times.

Some students drunk whiskey at the German pavillion and ate Chinese food at the Chinese pavillion. And in the Australian pavillion some students ate crocodile hamburgers and pizza. Hirohito Hosoe, 18, said: "It was good. It tastes like chicken."

Many students ate Turkish ice cream and the students said it was their favorite food, followed by Indian curry. I didn't try the curry but I ate the Turkish vanilla and coffee ice cream. It was stretchy like Japanese sweet rice cakes, but it was delicious. The students also said that the Sri Lankan "lotti chanai" was delicious. It is like Indian nan bread with curry inside.

The pavillions were very interesting. The most popular pavillion was the Egyptian pavillion followed by the Japanese pavillion. My favorite was the Australian one because they had a very big Australia platypus. I wanted to eat it, it looked like it would be delicious. I would probably fry it with yakiniku sauce and tomato ketchup.

At the Expo I saw the Crown Prince. He looked quite old but very kind. He smiled at everyone.

I think the Expo was a very good opportunity for us to learn about different countries without leaving Japan. I want to go there again.

What Judo Means To Me

By WATARU SAWA

Judo means 'gentle way'. When we study judo we don't just learn how to throw people we also learn discipline of the heart and body. Through our training people who study judo become kind and polite.

Jigorou Kanou started judo in Japan. In 1882 Kanou opened his first judo school in Tokyo. He was a judo master and educator. It soon became very popular and judo grew into a Japanese national sport. Do you know Ryouko Tani? She is a Japanese judo Olympic champion. My favorite judo master is Tadahiro Nomura. I like him because we're in the same weight class and we're the same height. I want to challenge him.

I started learning judo when I was ten years old. My father, who has a black belt, used to teach me judo in the park because the grass was soft. When I went to junior high school I joined judo club. We practised hard every day. We were a strong team and we won many tournaments.

In my first year at NIHS, we didn't have a judo club. But when Hayashi-sensei joined our school last year he started teaching judo. I joined the club. I like judo very much because it's fun and it keeps me healthy. My dream is to become a pastor but before I can go to Bible college I must work for a few years in a regular job. I'll become a security guard and I think my judo skills will help me.

Autumn Dance Fever

By Eri MIYATA

The Autumn festival has started. November 3rd was the day of the Big Festival in Shirakawa park near Fushimi station.

A lot of people came and many different high school students sold a lot of food. I was pleased because I could meet a lot of different high school students. Our group "Dance In Groups" did a performance in front of about 1,500 students. We were very excited.

The Autumn festival is held in over 39 places every year. This year,my friends joined the Big Festival and the Autumn Festival for the first time.
They also danced at the different venues. They practiced hard before the dance at the festival. Some of this school's teachers came. They bought some food and joined the parade. They walked around Fushimi with high school students.

Last year, famous "Waterboys" actor, Kazutoshi Kaneko came to Shirakawa
Park because he wanted to auction his T-shirt, shoes, bag, jumper for charity. His auction was successful. This year, famous singer "Nobody knows" came to Shirakawa Park because they had to sing songs from 17:30 until 18:30. The park was full. The concert was wonderful and they were very happy. A lot of people enjoyed it very much. The Big festival was unforgettable, thanks to everyone.

On Wednesday, November 23rd,this school's "Dance In Group" members went to the Rainbow Hall, Kasadera, because they had to dance, sell some food, help people around the hall etc. They also danced with 500 high school students. They were very happy.
